CASTED: Nurses is a ‘hands-on’ ED orthopedics course designed specifically for nurses.
Based on the CASTED:Emergency course, CASTED: Nurses highlights ED orthopedic principles, common and commonly missed injuries, and helps improve registrants’ understanding of the ED orthopedic assessment. Important differences between adults and kids are noted.
Case-based lectures emphasize proper history and physical findings to identify ‘red flag’ patients. A comprehensive review of x-rays is covered throughout the day – who needs an x-ray, which views to order, how to interpret them, and the limitations of x-ray.
Extensive ‘hands-on’ demonstrations and practice allow for the confidence that reductions and cast/splints are being done properly. Understanding proper moulding and positioning techniques will be emphasized.
At the end of the course, registrants will have significantly improved their MSK assessment and treatment skills; both knowing what to look for and how to manage and follow-up the wide spectrum of injuries seen in a busy ED.
This program meet the accreditation criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been accredited for up to 24 Mainpro+ credits. (3 credits/hour; 1-day course = 24)
