CASTED: Emergency

CASTED: Emergency is our comprehensive, practice-changing, high-yield ED orthopedics course. Numerous clinical pearls are offered on:

  • focused assessments
  • improving X-ray reads
  • making more accurate diagnoses
  • recognizing ‘red flag’ patients
  • knowing who needs a reduction
  • reduction and molding techniques
  • understanding who needs to see ortho and when

You will understand ED orthopedics – not memorize facts. CASTED: Emergency will give you better ED assessments, better x-ray interpretation, better reductions and immobilization and better disposition skills. A more complete handle on ED Orthopedics will be immediately apparent on your next shift!

CASTED: Emergency will change your approach to ED orthopedics. ‘Spaced repetition’ will help that change.

Day 1 is online and synchronous. Pick a date that works, live online lectures, with 30 days’ access to the recordings (to review or if you missed part of the day).

Day 2 is asynchronous online lectures. 60 days’ access (starts after Day 1) to watch at your own pace; a section at a time; or binge the day. More flexibility for when to access.

Day 3 is the in-person, hands-on day full of tips and tricks on ED reductions, immobilization and molding. Plus we will remind you of the key principles you learned online, and refine your attempts to put these in practice.

The online days help develop the right approach to ED ortho including: an efficient yet comprehensive assessment; the importance of history and physical; better ordering and interpreting of x-rays; important diagnoses to consider with a normal x-ray; and if, when, and why to involve ortho. Your ED ortho approach will change!

After the online days, you will practice these new concepts on shift. And when you take the ‘hands-on’ day down the road, we will review the ED ortho principles, refresh the ED-focused physical exams, and demonstrate several ED ortho reductions and immobilization methods. Then as you practice, CASTED faculty closely supervise and refine the details.

The ‘hands-on’ day gives you the technical side. How to examine? How to reduce? How to immobilize? How to mold? And the supervised practice ensures you have the confidence you are doing it right!

Hands On

Pick that online date and hands-on location that works best for you. Ideally, online first – then hands-on, with a month or 2 in between. The order can be reversed if that works better for your schedule.

We cover a lot of material in the course – taking it in over 3 days, and spaced in time, helps with retention and changing your practice. By the end of the course, you will rethink ED ortho.

International CASTED courses are usually 2-days on-line. Arrangements for separate hands-on days can be made.

CASTED: Emergency will improve your understanding of ED ortho no matter your knowledge level, and no matter where you practice. From residents to experienced docs – you will rethink ED ortho. From urban academic centres to rural hospitals, the content will be incredibly relevant. Every case and every concept is clinically focused. You are promised a course full of humour and numerous clinical pearls you will use on your next shift!

Sign-up for an existing course on our schedule page. Or request a course for your department, residency program, or conference. Resident discounts are available.
