CASTED:
Emergency
Master ED orthopedics with CASTED: Emergency. Improve assessments, X-ray reads, reductions, and patient care with this accredited, hands-on course.
High-Yield Orthopedics Course for the Emergency Department.
CASTED: Emergency is our comprehensive, practice-changing, high-yield ED orthopedics course.
You will understand ED orthopedics, not simply memorise facts. CASTED: Emergency will give you better ED assessments, better X-ray interpretation, better reductions and immobilisation, and better disposition skills. A more complete handle on ED orthopedics will be immediately apparent on your next shift.
CASTED: Emergency will change your approach to ED orthopedics. Spaced repetition will help that change stick.
Numerous clinical pearls are offered on:
- focused assessments
- improving X-ray interpretation
- making more accurate diagnoses
- recognising “red flag” patients
- knowing who needs a reduction
- reduction and moulding techniques
- understanding who needs to see orthopedics and when
CASTED:
Course Structure
DAY 1
Live Online Lectures
Day 1 is online and synchronous. Pick a date that works for you. Attend live online lectures, with 30 days’ access to the recordings (to review later or catch up on anything you missed).
DAY 2
Learning at Your Own Pace
Day 2 consists of asynchronous online lectures. You’ll have 60 days’ access (starting after Day 1) to watch at your own pace — a section at a time or the entire day at once. This flexible format lets you learn when it fits your schedule.
DAY 3
In-Person, Hands-On Practice
Day 3 is the in-person, hands-on day full of tips and tricks on ED reductions, immobilisation, and moulding. We’ll remind you of the key principles you learned online and help you refine your ability to put them into practice.
What you’ll learn.
The online days help you develop the right approach to ED orthopedics, including an efficient yet comprehensive assessment, the importance of history and physical exam, better ordering and interpretation of X-rays, important diagnoses to consider with a normal X-ray, and when and why to involve orthopedics.
After completing the online sessions, you’ll apply these new concepts on your next shift. When you attend the hands-on day later, we’ll review the ED orthopedic principles, refresh your ED-focused physical exam skills, and demonstrate several reduction and immobilisation methods. During practice, CASTED faculty closely supervise your technique and refine the details.
Hands-On Skills and Supervised Practice.
The hands-on day focuses on the technical side:
How to examine? How to reduce? How to immobilise? How to mould?
Supervised practice ensures you have the confidence and competence to do it right.
Pick the online date and hands-on location that work best for you. Ideally, complete the online portion first, then the hands-on session one or two months later — although the order can be reversed if that suits your schedule better.
We cover a lot of material in this course. Taking it in over three days, spaced in time, helps with retention and real practice change. By the end of the course, you will rethink ED orthopedics.
CASTED: Emergency Dates
CASTED courses range from 1-3 days and are either online, hands-on, or both. If it’s both, then pick the online date first, and from that course’s registration page you can select the hands-on day and city that best fit your schedule. The hands-on day options for each course are also on the schedule page.

FAQ
Roadshows
All of our CASTED courses are available as a roadshow. Roadshows can be requested for conferences, hospitals, residency programs, clinic groups and more. We generally arrange everything (travel, materials, manuals, shipping, etc.) except the space (which the host organization arranges).
Typically, roadshow requests from CME conferences are not associated with a minimum requirement.
In-person course requests from individual departments or groups generally require a minimum of 20 participants.
On-line only course requests have a minimum of 15 participants.
Typically, 3-4 months lead time is needed for requests from North American residency program, hospital and groups.
For conference related requests and for international requests, about 4-6 months lead time is needed.
Please contact us for further details or to request a roadshow.
Which Course Should I take?
CASTED: Emergency is based on the ED setting (as are CASTED: Kids, CASTED: Nurses and CASTED: Forces). Typically, traumatic cases with lots of practice with x-rays, reductions, and immobilization.
CASTED: Primary Care focuses on managing cases that present to a Primary Care office. More atraumatic cases (overuse or degenerative) with some traumatic. More time is spent reviewing office-based cases (work-ups and management), while practicing physical exams, joint injections and office-based immobilization (braces, splints, etc).
CASTED: Fracture Clinic is for family doctors who follow-up patients with acute fractures. Lot of cases, understanding which are ‘safe’ to manage, review the key management decisions, hands-on practice with fiberglass casting and cast removal, physical exam review, etc.
CASTED: Plastics is an advanced hand injury and complex laceration course for Emergency Physicians, residents, PA, NPs, and health care providers that manage these injuries in the ED. Best to take once you feel very comfortable with suturing, so the course can then elevate your skills to a higher level.
CASTED:Rads is our new ED-focused imaging course. It emphasizes plain films and touches on POCUS and other advanced imaging. Very practical and relevant, with clinical correlation to physical exam. No hands-on casting or splinting, but tons of cases. While not mandatory, our recommendation is to take the CASTED: Rads course 6-9 months after having taken a CASTED: Emergency course, as it complements that course’s teaching.
Each of the above categories has a separate manual and overlaps only slightly with each other (except CASTED: Rads, which is an extension of CASTED: Emergency). If your practice setting is mentioned above, then the noted CASTED course will likely be of great value to you.
Cancellation policy
Written notice must be provided to cancel registration in the CASTED course. Unless otherwise stated in our materials, the following policy applies.

Online Format and Tips
Tips to get the most out of the courses:
Pre-course: do any suggested pre-course work.
Day of the Course: (1) be well rested; (2) laptop or monitor to better view the images; (3) reliable Wi-fi; (4) manage the cases as you go.
In-Person Days
