CASTED: Kids is our 3-day ‘hands-on’ ED orthopedics course specifically tailored to pediatric emergency departments.
Based on our CASTED: Emergency course, CASTED: Kids comprehensively covers upper and lower extremity injuries to pediatric patients. The course also covers injuries to the older teen (with closed growth plates).
2-days of case-based lectures highlight pediatric orthopedic principles and the management of numerous injuries. ‘Red flags’ and practical ED approaches are reviewed in detail. Focus is on cases that are common, commonly missed, and commonly mismanaged. Differences is peds vs. adults will be highlighted. The clinical relevance is detailed as these differences can greatly impact our ED diagnosis, our ED management and our disposition plans.
The 3rd ‘hands-on’ day emphasizes numerous reductions and immobilization techniques. Closely supervised practice ensures you are doing it right! An pets-specific ED-focused MSK physical exam offers many useful tips.
CASTED: Kids offers numerous practical, clinical pearls throughout the course on:
- history, physical, and x-ray interpretation
- making more accurate diagnoses
- understanding pediatric elbows
- knowing remodelling and who needs a reduction
- reduction and molding techniques for numerous fractures
- understanding which injuries need to see ortho and when
While our CASTED: Emergency course offers numerous pediatric cases, this course adds many more pediatric cases (and none of the older osteoporotic-related injury patterns).
Accreditation
This program meets the accreditation criteria for the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been approved for 27 Mainpro+ credits. (3 credits per hour-1 day course=27)
This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1 – up to 9 hours) as defined by the Maintenance of the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians.
